Meaningful Use is defined using certified EHR technology in a meaningful manner (for example electronic prescribing); ensuring that the certified EHR technology is connected in a manner that provides for the electronic exchange of health information to improve the quality of care; and that in using certified EHR technology the provider must submit to the Secretary of Health & Human Services (HHS) information on quality of care and other measures. This course provides an overview of the HITECH Act and the Meaningful Use Program. The course reviews the implications for population health and public health and discusses how to improve the health of Americans and the performance of the nation's health system through health information technology (HIT). Topics covered include HITECH, Meaningful Use, Medicare-Medicaid HER incentives, and the 3 steps to Meaningful Use, standards for public health transactions, Health information Exchange, interoperability, Public Health Information Network, data exchange, and the basic principles of NEDSS.
