What are blind Studies?? How often are they performed?
15 MINUTES

According to CLIA, every lab must have a technical consultant who must, among other duties, ensure that all staff members maintain their competency to perform the tests conducted in the laboratory and report the results accurately. One of the technical consultants responsibilities is to assess the staffs ability to obtain the correct results on previously analyzed specimens, external proficiency testing samples, or internal blind testing samples.

In this course, we will discuss blind studies as a high-quality way to meet CLIA requirements for periodic proficiency testing. We will discuss considerations for blind studies and compare internal blind testing with external proficiency testing.

What is Accuracy? What is required and how often?
15 MINUTES

Accuracy is a measure of how close an instruments or tests measurements are to the actual value of an analyte. For unmodified, FDA-approved tests or instruments, the manufacturers acceptable standards for accuracy should be used. However, the laboratory must verify that it can produce the specified level of accuracy under its own conditions. For laboratory-developed or modified tests, the laboratory needs to determine an acceptable level of accuracy.

In this course, we will define accuracy using examples from the clinical laboratory. We will discuss CLIA regulations involving accuracy, including as part of validation or verification procedures and as part of requirements for controls. We will also discuss documentation of accuracy standards for tests and documentation of control results.

Understanding the Requirements and Best Practices for Compliance
30 MINUTES

Healthcare compliance is the complex process of strictly following the legal and professional standards applicable to a healthcare setting. It involves the development of numerous regulations and procedures to promote ethical conduct and monitor adherence to these rules. Training is a key process in raising awareness of compliance in all healthcare organizations. In this course, we will discuss the various requirements that must be met to be compliant in a healthcare setting. We will review the compliance training programs provided by HIPAA and OSHA that address specific rules, codes, and policies for healthcare providers.

Laboratory Personnel Requirements by Test Complexity
30 MINUTES

Laboratory personnel requirements vary based on the complexity of testing that is performed in a given laboratory. Test systems are categorized according to criteria detailed in the CLIA regulations. CLIA regulations then delineate, based on the categorization, the required personnel. Understanding these requirements is critical to ensure both compliance with all applicable regulations as well as optimal patient outcomes. In this course we will briefly review the categories of test complexity along with the criteria used to categorize them. Then we will discuss which laboratory personnel are required for each category, along with their required qualifications, roles, and responsibilities.

Eye Wash: Is this required?
15 MINUTES

Laboratories with potential exposure to corrosive materials are required to provide suitable facilities for immediate flushing of the eyes in the case of an emergency. Eye wash stations can be used to immediately wash chemicals or dangerous substances that have splashed into an individuals eyes prior to seeking further medical attention. They are an appropriate facility to provide immediate care, reducing workplace injury for laboratory personnel. This course will review eye wash laboratory standards.

Biohazard Waste Management: Local, County, State, Federal Regulations
20 MINUTES

The safe disposal of biohazard waste materials is a matter of highest priority not only to clinical laboratories and the healthcare organizations that utilize their services, but also to the health and safety of the public.

One size definitely does not fit all when it comes to the safe disposal of biohazard wastes. Different types of waste require different methods of disposal. Because of that, a variety of different local, county, state and federal regulations have been written to protect the health and safety of the public.

In this course, we will explore the types and varieties of biohazard wastes and take a look at the spectrum of regulations that apply to their disposal.
