According to the Population Reference Bureau, the 65 and older age group represents about 15 percent of the United States population. By 2060, the number of Americans 65 years and older is estimated to reach over 98 million or approximately 24 percent of the U.S. population.
According to Richard W. Besdine, MD, healthy aging in the United States is on the rise evidenced by a reduction in the rate of older people residing in nursing homes, even though the number of people who are over age 65 and who are over age 85 has increased; the number of people aged 75 to 84 reporting impairments has decreased, and the number of people over 65 years old with debilitating conditions has decreased.

This activity discusses the common changes related to aging, the impact of the aging population, and how to encourage healthy aging.

This course is approved by Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) to provide continuing education credit for long term care workers in Washington State.
