Recognizing and Responding to Medical Emergencies
60 MINUTES
1.00 CE CREDITS

A medical emergency is a serious injury or illness that poses an immediate risk to a person’s life or long-term health. These emergencies may result from trauma, such as a broken hip after a fall; a sudden illness; the worsening of a disease or condition, such as chest pain or difficulty breathing; or a seizure or stroke. First aid is the immediate care provided to an ill or injured person until treatment by trained medical personnel is available.
In this course, we discuss the importance of being prepared for a medical emergency. Although we discuss the initial steps of providing first aid for some common medical emergencies, it is essential to recognize that we can’t discuss all possible emergencies in a short time. Therefore, we encourage you to participate in a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) course for instruction about recognizing sudden cardiac arrest and providing oxygen and blood flow to the heart and brain until first responders arrive.
