This course will identify and discuss sources of contamination, describe current and former AORN recommendations related to covering and observing sterile tables, discuss techniques for reducing contamination, including covering back tables, and identify the major findings of a survey of 857 perioperative RNs.

Postoperative pain management in the ambulatory surgery setting requires nurses to identify the fundamental and assessment techniques to effectively manage patient pain by utilizing multimodal techniques, which focus on the goals of patient recovery, early mobilization, and prevention of avoidable complications by becoming familiar with updated pain management guidelines and opioid use minimization.
Traditional methods of postoperative pain management have shifted from pain-relieving regimens to a multimodal approach, with the goal to reduce or eliminate pain with minimal side effects, reduce reliance on opioids, and improve pain scores. There is a national consensus on reducing the use of opioids by following consensus guidelines and the effective use of alternatives developed by government agencies and key healthcare industry stakeholders.
In this course, participants will be provided an update on the goals of pain management, patient assessment guidelines, multimodal therapies, and patient population-specific risk factors. The course will also provide an overview of suggested organizational policies and procedures, roles, and responsibilities as well as management of orders and documentation requirements. In this course, you will learn about the different types of pain and pain management strategies. Pain may be acute or chronic and be nociceptive or neuropathic in origin. To manage pain, an understanding of the different types of pain and the pathophysiology behind the pain will aid you in performing a thorough pain assessment. Recognizing the mechanisms of nerve conduction and the phases of the pain process will help you differentiate from acute and chronic pain. You will review the methods available for the treatment of acute and chronic pain, common pain management modalities, common adjuvants used for the management of pain and you will identify alternate pain management strategies. This course will teach you how to identify the warning signs of workplace aggression, how to report suspicious or threatening situations, and how to respond to actual incidents of workplace violence in order to prevent violence in the workplace. Risk factors for workplace alcohol and drug abuse, as well as strategies for prevention and intervention, will be covered in this course. There will also be a discussion of the supervisor’s role in dealing with substance abuse in the workplace, the negative effects of substance abuse, potential signs of abuse, and the significant impact that substance abuse has on employee productivity. This course will cover appropriate assessments and intervention strategies for healthcare managers to assist those affected by substance abuse, as well as pertinent assessment and treatment strategies that healthcare providers can use to assist those affected by prescription drug abuse. This course is approved for 2 hours of continuing education by the Florida Board of Nursing.
