In 2017, almost half a million deaths in the U.S. alone cited hypertension as a primary contributing cause and nearly half of all adults have hypertension or are taking medication for hypertension (1, 9, 10). Hypertension is thus, a significant health issue in our country. Overcoming barriers to treatment and implementing patient-based interventions are imperative to effective community health strategies. Addressing heart disease and stroke through prevention, detection, and treatment of risk factors is an objective of the Healthy People 2020 initiative that aims to improve specific population health issues by 2020.
