Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is a global health emergency. The rapid and continuous spread of SARS-CoV-2 around the world has resulted in more than 75 million infections and more than 1.5 million deaths. The lack of effective therapeutics and vaccines has contributed to the rapid spread and high mortality and morbidity of COVID-19. The ongoing pandemic has resulted in significant disruption of socioeconomic and healthcare infrastructure around the globe. However, the recent and rapid advances in the development of COVID-19 vaccines will provide much-needed tools to control the pandemic. Furthermore, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) of innovative vaccine technologies. This course will discuss various COVID-19 vaccine development strategies. Additionally, the storage, handling, and administration guidelines of the currently available COVID-19 vaccines will be addressed.
