Aging causes physiological breakdown in muscles, bones, and joints. These age-related changes contribute to a decrease in physical mobility. Although loss of muscle mass can begin as early as 30 years of age, it accelerates after age 50. The amount of physical activity that a person does has a direct impact on the rate of loss. In this course, we will review the effects of aging related to physical activity, the prevalence of decreased mobility in the elderly, and the evidence-based guidelines to promote physical function in older adults as it relates to physical fitness.
