According to Infection Control Today, approximately 5 million patients in the United Sates are put at risk for a potentially life-threatening infection due to the insertion of a medical device. In another article in Infection Control Today, persons with a central-line associated blood stream infection (CLABSI) are 2-4 times more likely to die due to an infection and CLABSIs are a leading contributor to healthcare acquired infections. This course will provide an overview of central venous catheters (CVC), discuss the prevalence of complications from CVCs, and review evidence-based guidelines in the documentation, insertion, assessment, and management of CVCs.
