Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major health problem and a leading cause of mortality and morbidity throughout the world. COPD is the fourth cause of death in the United States and is predicted to be 3rd in 2020. COPD is a preventable and treatable disease. The diagnosis and treatment of COPD are continuously changing. Recent studies indicate that COPD is a complex heterogenous syndrome that is caused by defined pathophysiological mechanisms. This course will provide an update regarding the current understating of COPD and its prevalence, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment strategies. Management of COPD exacerbations and treatment of acute events will be also discussed.
