Contamination in the operating room (OR) is primarily prevented by heating ventilation, and air conditioning systems, cleaning and disinfecting environmental surfaces, wearing appropriate surgical attire, and implementing sterile technique. This course will identify and discuss sources of contamination, describe current and former AORN recommendations related to covering and observing sterile tables, discuss techniques for reducing contamination, including covering back tables, and identify the major findings of a survey of 857 perioperative RNs.
