DOT
As the ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) prepare to reopen after being closed due to COVID-19 the past several weeks. The federal government, CMS, and accreditation organizations are also reviewing the conditions for which reopening should be permitted. CMS has recently updated the criteria for reopening ASCs which includes data-driven conditions that each region or state should satisfy prior to a phased reopening. There are a number of available resources for ASCs including a checklist and planning guide developed by the leading ASC professional organizations which include the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses, the American Hospital Association, and the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association. Additionally - State Governors, Public Health Officials, and healthcare leaders are all seeking a way forward to opening ASCs without putting additional strain on healthcare workers and the supply chain. With all the leadership and resources that are working towards this goal, we believe that another perspective may be helpful. We have assembled a panel of present and former accreditation surveyors to join in on the discussion of when, how, and where ASCs should begin opening from a standards and compliance point of view. None of the panelist will be asked specific accreditation questions that involve their current or former accreditation organizations. The session will draw from their most challenging survey experiences and their many professional accomplishments. Furthermore, we will ask a few questions that are meant to simulate a point in time in future, as if we were looking back on decisions made during the COVID-19 crisis, perhaps many months or a few years from now. What will they consider to be the most critical questions that we should ask ourselves now which may have a significant impact on the health of ASCs in the future.
