As a healthcare provider, it is important to understand the difference between power of attorney (POA), conservators, and guardians. It is a reality that many of our patients and their families will need to deal with these concepts as the population ages. Each of these categories plays a different role in elder law and having knowledge of these differences can help patients and their families as they navigate the process of determining the best choices for their healthcare. Our specialty is not in elder law and we are not expected to advise our clients in legal issues, but it is an area that patients and their families may face, therefore, it is beneficial to them for healthcare professionals to be familiar with the terms. This course will compare POA, conservators, and guardians so health professionals will be able to understand what each term refers to as they come across them in practice. This course will also discuss recent findings from the literature along with differences based on the patient’s care setting.
