Safely Managing Medications

Course Overview
This course will discuss medication considerations for special populations, such as seniors, individuals with chronic health conditions, and those with developmental disabilities. We will briefly review changes in the body related to aging and how these changes may affect how medicines work. We will explain polypharmacy, its contributing factors, the possible effects of complex medication schedules, and tips to reduce polypharmacy risks. In addition, we will review techniques to ensure safe and accurate medication administration, explain medication reconciliation, and discuss the concept of a Just Culture. We will differentiate between caregiver administration and assisting with self-directed medicine administration. Finally, we will discuss emergency preparedness and the importance of having a reserve supply of medicines available.
Goal
This course is designed to provide healthcare professionals with the necessary information and strategies to optimize medication management in special populations, including seniors, individuals with chronic health conditions, and those with developmental disabilities, as well as be able to mitigate risks associated with polypharmacy, implement safe medication administration techniques, and prioritize emergency preparedness in medication management. Managing Hypertension in Long-term Care & Home Health, Course Code: CO2236729

Hypertension is when blood pressure, the force of blood pushing against the walls of the blood vessels, is consistently too high. The systolic reading indicates the pressure the blood exerts against the artery walls when the heart beats, and the diastolic reading indicates the pressure that the blood exerts against the artery walls when the heart is resting between beats. In this course, we will review current trends and best practices related to managing hypertension for patients in long-term care facilities and in home health settings.

This course is approved by Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) to provide continuing education credit for long term care workers in Washington State.

Overview of Palliative Care
