This course will discuss medication considerations for special populations, such as seniors, individuals with chronic health conditions, and those with developmental disabilities. We will briefly review changes in the body related to aging and how these changes may affect how medicines work. We will explain polypharmacy, its contributing factors, the possible effects of complex medication schedules, and tips to reduce polypharmacy risks. In addition, we will review techniques to ensure safe and accurate medication administration, explain medication reconciliation, and discuss the concept of a Just Culture. We will differentiate between caregiver administration and assisting with self-directed medicine administration. Finally, we will discuss emergency preparedness and the importance of having a reserve supply of medicines available.
