MedTrainer’s in-house compliance experts are rapidly building content designed to meet long-term care regulations for all types of long-term care (LTC) facilities, including skilled nursing, assisted living, hospice, behavioral health, and rehabilitative services. Dozens of hours have been added to MedTrainer’s healthcare learning management system (LMS) in 2025, with more than 25 additional hours already in development.
Education to Meet Long-Term Care Regulations
Nearly all courses needed to meet state-specific long-term care regulation requirements for staff orientation and in-service training are currently available in MedTrainer Learning. Additional long-term care training topics are available, including assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), psychosocial needs of older adults, nutrition and food safety, plans of care, memory care and dementia, medication management, and more. Courses currently in development focus on resident-centered care, fostering independence with ADLs and restorative nursing, as well as less commonly requested role-specific courses.
Required courses for behavioral health and mental health centers are covered in MedTrainer’s extensive healthcare-specific course library with plenty of options around substance abuse, addiction help, and communicable diseases. The team is expanding the course content available on traumatic brain injury and intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and in the process of obtaining accreditation approvals to provide continuing education (CE) for rehabilitation professionals in LTC settings, such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.

Challenges in LTC Training
LTC training comes with a unique set of challenges that can impact both the quality of care and the ability of LTCs to stay in compliance with timely completion of required training.
The high turnover rate in long-term care creates a constant need for training new staff, which can strain resources and lead to inconsistent care. High turnover also means that newly hired employees are often less experienced, requiring more intensive training and support to get up to speed quickly.
Long-term care staff are required to master a broad spectrum of skills, ranging from clinical competencies (e.g., medication administration, wound care, and monitoring vital signs) to interpersonal and emotional skills (e.g., communication, empathy, and dealing with residents’ behavioral challenges). This often means that organizations need a large volume of courses to accommodate the different training requirements, necessitating the use of a healthcare LMS to manage the scope.
