Infections from Peripherally Inserted IV Lines
60 MINUTES
1.00 CE CREDITS

Intravenous catheter therapy has been an important part of patient care since the first plastic IV catheters were introduced, which was more than 70 years ago. Conventional peripheral intravenous lines deliver short-term IV therapy, typically via veins in the patient’s hand or arm. These IV lines make it possible to administer life-saving fluids, medications, and blood products directly into the patient’s bloodstream. IV therapy plays a vital role in patient care. It is the most common invasive hospital procedure performed throughout the world. About 90% of all hospitalized patients receive some form of intravenous therapy. Because the likelihood of infiltration and phlebitis increases the longer the catheter remains in place, intravenous lines need to be replaced frequently. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that catheters be replaced at least every 72 to 96 hours. The course Infections from Peripherally Inserted IV Lines will review current trends and best practices related to preventing and managing infections from peripherally inserted IV lines. Course expiration date: 10/6/2025

Ebola Awareness
60 MINUTES
1.00 CE CREDITS

Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), usually shortened to Ebola, is a rare but highly infectious and deadly disease found in people as well as nonhuman primates. This course reviews Ebola awareness as it stands in the present world. We begin with a review of Ebola Virus Disease, including facts on Ebola virus, pathogenesis, and transmission. Next, treatment and prevention of EVD is discussed, including information on the Ebola vaccine rVSV-ZEBOV. The course ends with coverage of how healthcare workers can provide care for an Ebola patient while practicing proper infection control to protect themselves and others from Ebola infection. Course expiration date: 11/11/2024

Reducing the Social Stigma Generated by a Pandemic
30 MINUTES
0.50 CE CREDITS

Public health emergencies are stressful for communities and individuals. Anxiety and fear regarding a public health emergency can lead to discrimination and a social stigma toward places, things, or people. Discrimination and social stigma occur when people associate a disease, such as COVID-19, with a specific nationality or population, though not everyone from that country/region in that population has, or is at risk for, the condition. Stigma and discrimination can also occur when a person diagnosed with the condition has been released from quarantine. This course will discuss the effects of stigma on society and strategies to address this stigma. Course expiration date: 4/26/2025
