Malignant Hyperthermia
15 MINUTES
0.25 CE CREDITS

Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a rare but potentially fatal, time-critical pharmacogenetic crisis of skeletal muscle hypermetabolism most often triggered by potent volatile inhalational anesthetics and/or succinylcholine. This course reviews current, practical guidance for recognizing MH early—especially unexplained rising end-tidal CO₂, tachycardia, acidosis, rigidity, and evolving hyperthermia—while differentiating MH from common mimics such as ventilatory/circuit problems, sepsis, thyroid storm, and medication-related syndromes. Learners will follow an evidence-based MH crisis algorithm emphasizing immediate trigger cessation, 100% oxygen hyperventilation, prompt dantrolene administration with attention to formulation/reconstitution logistics, parallel treatment of complications (hyperkalemia, rhabdomyolysis, acidosis, hyperthermia), and appropriate monitoring and handoff to higher-acuity care, with an added focus on preparedness strategies like cognitive aids, role assignment, and simulation in OR, ASC, NORA, and office-based settings.
